I have a 1989 Mercury 100HP outboard with Power trim and Tilt. Used the trim and tilt a week ago and it worked fine. Tried to use it this weekend and the it would trim up or down. I hit the button on my throttle (the only button to operate it) and all i hear is the solenoid clicking. Is it possible there is something else wrong or is it most likely the electric trim and tilt motor is bad? Also my other issue is that the motor is stuck in the down position where i cannt get to the trim and til motor to unbolt it and whatnot. When i try to lift the motor, it seems to be locked in place. Ive tried putting the throttle in forward but the motor still seems to locked down. Any ideas on how to lift the motor so i can access the power tirm and til componenets? Thanks in advance for your help.

single ram? maybe if you lay on your back and look up under engine you can see the nylon release screw. About 3/4" diameter head. 2-3 turns out and your system should lift or drop with almost no hydraulic resistance. don't overtighten it. it doesn't work by being tight. it works by moving forward until an oring slips inside the final bore diamter. overtightening the manual release accomplishes nothing but smashing the tip.

Its actually got two smaller rams and one big ram. This is probably considered a single ram. the two smaller rams detach easily its the big ram holding it.

that is a three ram system. It still has manual bypass but I don't know if it is easy to get to.

look for part number # 11 on your system and back it out 2-3 turns.

I have never tried this on a boat but it looks like if you could get shaft #22 to slide about 1 inch right then your system would drop like a stone and leave a puddle of oil on pavement. After that it should move freely in any direction. I don't particularly like this though. If you do it then you are committed to needing a trim system rebuild.

Did you try to jump the trim soloniod with a screw driver if it works the solenoid is bad those are cheap and easy to fix.

Thanks guys, i did find the manual release screw but nothing seems to happen. I may not have turned it out enough. Is there anything else i should do to the system while i have to motor off? Should i replace the fluid or just replace the motor and call it good?

I checked the solenoid and it is good. Must be my motor

Re: Mercury Outboard Power Trim and Tilt

I had same issue with same style Trim and Tilt unit with the clicking of the solenoids only. I had to replace the motor - problem solved. To replace that motor on the trim and tilt you will need to support your outboard and remove the right side tilt bracket. I actually just removed all the bolts on that bracket and removed the large nut on the tilt bracket and just moved the bracket out enough to remove the trim and tilt unit to replace the motor.
