mercury lower unit questions

i have a 1972 mercury 50hp 500 with a jet prop. I recently picked up a 1981 mercury 90hp motor. can i make the jet prop off of my 50hp motor work on the 90?

The 50 hp has a much smaller lower unit , just can not be adapted to the 90 hp.--------90 hp would rip the teeth off the gears !
