Mercury lower shift shaft install

Hey everyone. I have a 2013 60hp 4 stroke that had a bent lower shift shaft, which was causing binding in the controls upon install. I removed the lower unit, placed it in a vise, removed the lower shift shaft and the bushing/oring with it. My problem I am having is getting the parts in the lower unit to allow the new shift shaft to go in. Anyone ever experienced this before? I’m trying to avoid having to disassemble the lower unit as I have never done that before.

Your shift cam has gotten out of place. Drain the gear oil if you haven't already so you can see down the hole. The cam is only held by the shaft so it can move around. You will need to tip the lu or tap on it with a rubber hammer to make the cam move to where it can be seen and then use either a long screwdriver or other rod to get the spline hole in the center where the shift shaft will go in. I'm going to include a picture of the cam so you know what to look for. Oh and don't forget to refill the lu with lube.

Btw, after you get the shift shaft in place I would suggest putting both the trans and the shift lever in neutral before reinstalling the lu.

So I gave this a shot, also used a small/long magnet to get the piece in place. I have discovered that the piece is broken. It seems that it is cast and probably brittle. Do you have a part number for that piece by chance? I guess I’ll be pulling the lower unit apart 😢.

I just entered your serial number at this site and pulled up your service manual. You should save this web page to "Favorites" if it is the right one.

From what I can tell (no expert I'm a first time boat owner newbie) this might be your part described as #11

Part number 842071A01 pictured below assuming this pic is accurate. I do not know this since I haven't seen the part before.

Please oh please if someone sees the info that I have found to be wrong speak up.

Cheers,

Thank you! I believe you’re correct. Now if only I could figure out how to pull this lower unit apart and put it back together correctly. Lol. For a car mechanic, I’ve been having trouble with this outboard.

Best thing to do is get the factory service manual. I got one used on ebay for my motor. I think (emphasize think) this is the manual you need I found on ebay. Part number is 90-866917 but PLEASE confirm your motor serial number and make sure there isn't a later edition.

Once you get the Factory Service Manual and start pulling parts you'll see that these things are all pretty basic. It seems like a huge undertaking when you're just staring at the problem, but, for example, once you pull the bearing carrier and can see all the way in, it'll take shape.
