Have a 96 Merc 90 on my Mako. Filled tank completely last weekend, went trolling- no prob, never hit WOT. On the way back I opened her up and she died- motor just shuts off. Happened about 2 minutes after WOT. She has done this 3x, each time a minute or two after I go WOT, even after trolling for hours. If I back off a little, she's fine. Each time she starts right back up if I wait a minute. Today- she dies. I reached down and squeezed the primer bulb, then went to WOT and she died again. Held back a little, she was fine. I've changed the filter, no water or visible crap in the fuel. Any clues? Does the primer bulb have a valve that could shut off at WOT? I bought this boat two months ago and had no problems until I topped her off last weekend. Thanks

Re: mercury dies at WOT

Welcome to iboats, Bo.
Does this boat have a new or portable fuel tank?
If so, unbolt the fitting piece on the top of the tank, and pull it off. At the bottom of the pickup tube that goes down into the tank, there might be a plastic ball. The boat will run fine without this. I can't tell you to take it out,and throw it as far as your arm can propell it due to liability concernes. But the thing in my opinion is useless, and causes this problem. The idiot that thought this device up,should have the countless number of boaters he has stranded, IN HIS NIGHTMARES!
I feel better now, but this "anti-siphon" check valve can cut-off fuel supplies at WOT, on high-demand engines.
It's supposed to keep the fuel from siphoning out of the tank and poluting the water. To0 prevent this, just unhook the puppy, and shut the vent.
If this doesn't cure your problem, get back to iboats, for a better idea than mine.
