Hi, I have a 1979 Mercury V-150.The trouble starts everytime I start the engine in the mornings and I hammer the throttle to w-o-t,it starts bogging real bad and has no power. After keeping it at w-o-t for an average of 2-3 minutes,it will plane out and run great pretty much the rest of the day,but if I fish a couple of hours and go to crank it,it's hard to start and it begins that bogging again.I've replaced the plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel lines, cleaned out the tanks, rebuilt all 3 carbs. The ball on the fuel line isn't leaking down,it's firing on all cylinders, and it has good compression.I've owned it for about 6 months, and it has done this everytime I have taken it out.I recently replaced the reed valves and overhauled the powerhead, but still no change.I'm at my whits end and would appreciate any guidance to help solve this nightmare. Thanks,KENNY

Re: Mercury bogging

sounds like a stuck carb float 2 me.
with engine off, squeeze primer bulb and see
if u have gas leaking outa front of a carb.
look at all check valves starting at primer bulb
and into the 3 carbs.
the 150 is a thirsty girl and don't take kindly
to fuel problems...
good luck, she's a screaming engine!
M.Y.

edit:
be aware that fuel delivery is directly tied to
internal pressure... have u done a compression test yet???

M.Y., You hit the nail right on the head.I pumped the ball and sure enough, fuel came pouring out of the top carburetor.I checked the float and it was stuck.Got it squared away and it has plenty of get up and go.No more bogging out of that baby. Thanks a million for the great knowledge that you are blessed with. This is indeed an excellent site to be a part of,and a blessing to have people like yourself to be so helpful. Thanks again,kenny72

Re: Mercury bogging

KENNY,I too am new to this site...just registered...after reading your problem, it is VERY similar to my current problem. I have a 1978 Merc 850 and when I bury the throttle it bogs for a while, then it eventually catches and takes off. I may have a different cause and I wanted to run my thought by you and leverage your insight. When I pump my bulb, I have gas leak around the fuel inlet cover (the plastic cap that you take off to get to the fuel screen) I do have an o-ring in place, but that plastic cap does not feel like it really seats itself on the o-ring, even when you really tighten the screw. My thought is to order a new o-ring and fuel inlet cover to see if that helps. Basically, I believe that I have a leak in my fuel line there and when I bury the throttle, it is not able to get enough gas. Does this make sense at all. (I am not skilled/experienced enough to take a whole lot apart and rebuild) I'd appreciate your insight. I was amazed at your problem description, it is EXACTLY as I would describe my issue!
