Depending on the year, that motor has a single 40A voltage regulator, twin 20Amp voltage regulators, or a rectifier and unregulated charging system. A 1987 Merc 150XR2 looks to have the rectifier. Newer motors have the VRs. Not sure of the charging capacity of the '87, but expect to be no more than 10Amps.

Magnets in the flywheel spin past stator coils, producing the electricity for the VRs to rectify and regulate.

has tha 16 amp chargin stuff.. individual regulator and rectifier.. it seems like its jus enough ta keep up with tha main starting battery if ya runnin' very many electronics.. for years and on 90% of all tha mercs i've built/had i ran tha 16 amp stuff with jus a rectifier without any problems but always had very good battery's with good maintenance...............

That motor has a 16amp charging system and only the 1991 had a water cooled 40 amp rectifier
