This is my first post. I have read all the rough idle posts and still have a question. I have a 2002 90HP 2-stroke Mecury Outboard that runs smooth after 2,300 RPM, but misses, smokes, idles rough to beat the band at idle and at trolling speeds. I have had it to one repair shop who cleaned the carbs, ran sea-foam through it, cleaned the gas tank dry and refilled it with marine grade gas, it was worse when they gave it back and charged $630. I then contacted the factory and they suggested an authorized dealer who again, cleaned the carborator and installed new jets, plugs and tuneed up the motor and gave it back after billing $423. So now I have about $1,000 in trying to get this Mercury to run smooth so I can troll and idle. Any more "expert help" and I might as well get a new 4-cyl 4-stroke (which runs great on my other boat. Can anyone tell me any advice on what I can do other than use this motor as a boat anchor? That is where I am at with this Mercury. A dealer said that if I went with an E-Tec I would not now be having this problem, but I have another Merc and it runs very smooth and I have had a 90 HP Johnson that ran smooth for 25 years. And this Merc ran great when new. Can anyone help me with this. I have tried cleaning, jets, water removal, lline and tank cleaning, new plugs and wires, sea foam, carbarator cleaning sprays, mechancial carborator cleaing by the dealer, etc. etc. It still runs like a bucking mule.

I have that exact engine and have had a CDM go out. Mine was a thermal problem and it would start and run and you really couldn't tell something was wrong at idle speeds. Once you got past the no wake buoy's and hammered down it would gasp and all the other bad things but would continue to slowly increase in rpm's. Once it healed itself (a couple of minutes), all the smoke and bad things cleared out and it ran perfectly the remainder of the day. Starting was instantaneous.

I run a generous portion of Sea Foam in every tank and keep fresh fuel in it. Use Quicksilver oil. Never had a fuel/carb issue and bought it in 2004. My Avatar is a picture of the wake at WOT and 50+ gps mph so it must be doing something right.

Ha, this popped up in the "Similar Threads" at the bottom of another post I was answering. Guess I missed the 2010 part. Sorry...having a senior moment. Grin.

Idle mixture settings are a little sensitive on that motor, as well as on the 75 HP version. Mess with them only if you know what you are doing. Sounds like they are set way to0 rich, hence the roughness at just off idle and excess smoke. The type of oil you use may also contribute to the smoke problem.

My 75 did the same thing and I went thrue exactly what youre doing. Silver tip is right about the adjustment. With the motor running starting at the top carb gentely turn the idle adjustment srew all the way in then open it back up 1 full turn wait to see if it changes the idle before going to the next carb then repeat the steps on all three carbs, now if that didnt smooth it out back them out 1/8 of a turn stating at the top again. Just make sure and do small adjustments and wait to hear and feel how the motor changes with each new setting. Good Luck

I have 92 75hp that starts hard. Just replaced the voltage reg. due to some wires looked bad(slight melt down). Now there is no change to the hard start and then we noticed no spark on middle plug(new plugs). Anybody know what I should check first
