Mercury 9.9 2 stroke won't start

Hi guys ,new to the forum here.
I have a Mercury 9.9 that has fuel,spark and compression yet won't run.instead of pulling like crazy I've taken the pull start off and spin the flywheel with a drill and socket.through this I've found that every once in a while I'll hear a pop and see a poof of smoke from both the carb and out of the lower end.does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Check flywheel key.----Or perhaps switch plug wires.-----And does spark jump a gap of at least 5/16" , yes or no ?
