Mercury 8hp Shift Shaft Adjustment

I just replaced my water pump and am trying to adjust the shift shaft height. The manual says to carefully adjust the shift shaft to the correct measurement before reassembling, but I cannot find what this measurement is supposed to be anywhere (shame on the manual!).

Does anyone know what it should be? I assume that the measurement is in inches between the top of the water pump plate and the center of the hole at the top of the shift shaft.

If I cannot get this measurement, does anyone have a rule of thumb so that I do not have to figure it out by trial and error?
