Mercury 800 starting problem

My 1978 Mercury 800 only starts if I tilt the engine up about 45 degrees then it starts fine. When it's warm it will usually start normally but occasionally even when warm it needs raising to start? Can anyone offer any advice? It's nothing to do with gears or the starter. Thanks! Nick

Make sure your float levels are correct.
Check the choke to ensure the choke plates are closing all the way.
Slightly advance the throttle when starting and hold the choke closed until the engine tries to start.

I'd also check the mercury switch position.
