Re: mercury 80 hp

well really need more info on work done to motor and any other problems you may have had. But i would idle it up by a 1/8th of a turn to left. sound like it is running to lean. my 80 model did same thing, ran great on muffs but in water dies when going from neutral to drive. i had to idle it up on water. mine has 3 carbs, had to idle all 3 a 1/8 or more turns till all were running right.

Wouldn't the water muff (water pressure) speed up the idle? ......giving a wrong or false read on the normal idle speed.........

any work done on the motor recently ?

we have changed fuel pump diaphagm, spark plugs, fuel line, cleaned carbs twice. I by passed the fuel pump today and it will stay running until you put it in gear you can pump the throttle and it will take but will not idle in gear

Re: mercury 80 hp

could be like rosser1 said and your running lean - and or your your linkage is out of sync - but do this first - give each idle mix screw a 1/4 turn to the left - if she stays running - now do a runnign asdjustment on each - and do this on the water - put it in gear and on 1 carb at a time turn the mix screw left til rpm's go up then just as they fall note the postion -then slowly do the same thing to the right -rpm's climb then as they fall come back approximately half way from the previous noted position -or i like to come back a 1/4 turn - if she idles fine great -if not now you can turn the screws an 1/8th turn to the left to richen until you get the sweet spot -if she goes lean on the hole shot to midrange you need to richen the idle a little more as the idle is important up to the midrange .
