Mercury 7.5 gear shift stuck

I have a Mercury 7.5 dont no the year serial # 3281313 .model# 837-2756,have not cranked motor yet gear lever seems to be stuck will not shift in forward or reverse, could it be that it will only shift when running. help

Hi, David. Not to worry. They generally don't like to shift when they aren't actually running.<br />It's normal. It should operate fine in the water.<br />If not, come on back, and the gang here will steer you on what to do.<br />Good luck on the water.
