mercury 7.5 engine shorting out circa early 70's

my engine is shorting out at low rpm's. the engine will run rough then die. there is a clicking sound when the case is on the engine. it is a constant click, click, click at the rate of about 4 clicks per second. the engine runs perfect when i remove the hood of the kicker.<br /> the problem only occurs when the hood is on the engine. any suggestions on what is causing the motor to short out and die. thanks

Ck the plugs wires on the back latch assm. It's hard to say beond that we don't know the yr of the engine
