I am looking at getting a Mecury 7.5 hp 2 stroke (not sure of the year it is black with brown and white stripes and the MERCURY is white in caps. If you can venture a guess on the year it would be wonderful.

Ok now I am wondering if this is the right engine for my specific use case.

1. Achilles SPD-4AD 10.17 lenght 57" beam.
2. Wood Floor.
3. 2 Adults and 2 small children.
4. Primary boating is on the Tidal Potomac and tributaries.

My goal is to be able to use this for mostly fishing to keep the mess off of the main boat. It would mostly be my son (3) and myself. Sometimes his friend likes to go with us (4). I would also like to be able to use this to go to a restaurant with the family and check out some of the places we can not go with the main boat. I am looking at this and a 2003 6hp 4stroke Merc. I have never owned a Mercury in my life so I am looking for reliability and which one would be a better fit. Both are used and I have been considering getting both and then trying them out and selling the one I do not like. But I would prefer not to do that as $$ is not flowing as it use to. Help here would be very much appreiciated.

Re: Mercury 7.5 2 stroke Question

The 7.5 merc in good condition is a great motor and should be adequate for your needs. The four stroke 6 hp is a little heavy and does not perform anywhere near as good as the 7.5.

Re: Mercury 7.5 2 stroke Question

I have not gone out to look at the 7.5 as of yet but I have seen the 6hp. The guy states that the 7.5 looks new and when he tried to start it it did on the first pull. Any idea as to how old it is. He states he thinks it is early 90's but I can not find a early 90's 7.5.

Thanks

Also I have found a 1991 7.5 Johnson any ideas with this one in the mix. It is a couple of hundred less money.

Re: Mercury 7.5 2 stroke Question

Any of theses motors will do. A compression test will tell you if good or bad. Both cylinders should be within 8% of each other and at least 110 PSI. Lower than that could mean the motor is worn. If the motor has been sitting for some months a shot of two stroke oil in the plug holes may bring the pressures up.

Closing post. I bought a 1996 9.9 Mariner. Thanks for the input.
