Mercury 60hp Question

I have a Mercury 60hp on a Bass Boat. I keep it an a metal garage not atached to the house. After use I normally shut the Gas Cap Vent and leave the Fuel line connected to the Motor. When it is warm outside i smell Gas, and the tank is under pressure. I took the breather box off and it was seaping Gas. I know nothing is wrong with the carbs being they were just rebuilt.

My question is how should i properly keep it.

Thanks in advance, John

Re: Mercury 60hp Question

Leave the tank vent open. Close it when moving the boat to the ramp if you have problems with gas sloshing out.

Re: Mercury 60hp Question

Sounds like the heat is pressurizing the tank and forcing gas out the carb.

Re: Mercury 60hp Question

Hi
I would say you need to run the motor after you disconnect the fuel line.
until the motor stops this way you run less chance of fouling your carbs.
Here in Ga I see more carbs fouled because of the hot summers. With just a little
care most of the carb fouling can be prevented with fuel treatment and proper
storage
Disconnect your fuel line
Keep your tanks vented
Run your motor until it stops everytime

Just my 2 cents worth I hope it helps

Re: Mercury 60hp Question

leave the vent open

fuel expands when warmed up and you're basically pumping it up the line.
depending on the volume of liquid combined with a low volume of air in the tank you could probably get quite a few psi on there.
