On starting up for the season, my engine would run fine for a few minutes, then die on me. I would start again quite easily and I go a few hundred yards, repeating this until I managed to limp to my dock. I was told to change the fuel filter. I thought this was done by my local workshop, but apparently not. I changed the filter and shot the fuel with a load of fuel stabilizer, and after a good 2 hours running, all was well, except my engine is making that chirping sound occasionally. I think that has something to do with the water pump, but the water stream from it looks strong! Any ideas please?

Overheat is usually a solid tone. What year motor? 2 cycle or 4 cycle?

If 2 cycle, check oil level.
