I have a Mercury 50hp 2 stroke 2014 ELPTO. I just got the boat and was changing the water pump and I noticed under the water pump there seems to be a lot of corrosion. This item appears to be an anode. I was wondering if it was hard to replace this item

It is not difficult to replace it. For sacrificial anode like zinc anode, it is quite easy, you may place the zinc anode near the place you don't want to get corrosion.

Won't find any anode located under the water pump housing, there's a highly corrosion going there, pics speaks for themselves. Is it a fresh or salt water motor use ? I find that if wanting to long live the lower unit to happen, must remove it from time to time, clean everything to an impeccable condition, once done brush a medium coat of marine grease under the WP housing area and the whole extension of the WP's surounding. The grease will protect those areas well against rust, corrosion, salt, crap, marine growth build ups....

Happy Boating
