I have a Merc 500 attached to a 24 foot pontoon boat. Not fast but it gets us there. I need to do some maintenance on the engine and I need a starting point. Where is the engine I.D. located on it? All I can find is part of a plaque at the front and it is unreadable. There is some stamped writing on the block that says Full-Jeweled and under that it says Super-Thunderbolt. I have no clue what year model it is. Any help anyone can give me would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks,
XCoastie (Semper Paratus)

The plaque you cannot read is the one you need.
Figures, don't it? Some mercs have the serial number stamped on the port side of the block, on a 1" round aluminum cap..It looks like a freeze plug on a car.
Also, look on the hinge plate, below the transom mounts for another sticker.

Re: Mercury 500 info

It has been several years ago but I had a 73 model merc 500.
If I am remembering correctly the numbers you need are stamped on the tube where the steering cable hooks up.
The Thunder Bolt you are referring to is the ignition system on that motor. I wish I could remember more but as I said earlier it has been a few years since I seen it.

Hope this helps,
sprintflyer
