I am hoping some of the more experienced folks here can summarize the difference (if any) in a 2001 Merc 50HP 4 Stroke EFI engine, as compared to the newer 2002, etc. engines. Are they essentially the same?

I would really like to know the differences in these for different model years. I have heard it is easy to convert the newer years from 50HP to 60HP.

Appreciate any information and/or websites that have this kind of data.

I didn't think Merc made an EFI 50 in 2001.

Thanks JB for responding. How would I be able to fond out and verifiy this? I am negotiating a purchase for a 50 HP 4 Stroke that is supposed to be a NEW 2001 EFI with a factory warranty.

I have been trying to find a website or place on the net to find this info.

Regards....

CaBassGuy

Look at the engine. If it has carbs its obviously not EFI. The engine cover should also have the words "Four Stroke EFI" if it is indeed EFI. You may also want to make sure this is not a misrepresentation (accidentally or on purpose) and the engine is not a two stroke.

Thanks JB and Upinsmoke. This opens up my motor deal to getting some clarification.

Since I am waiting for an Affadavit of Sale to authorize the shipment, I can catch this and get things straight. I know the sales manager I was dealing with verified this was a 4 Stroke EFI, it may be that they have the year wrong.

Regardless, your feedback has helped a lot, at least I can ask the right questions!!

CaBassMan

Here's a Mariner/Merc/Yamaha 50hp 4 stroke pic showing carbs. It a 1996 motor but the later carbed models should be the same. I checked my manual for motors between 1995 & 2000...all have carbs. Could be they switched to EFI in 2001.

Sorry I don't have a better pic...this one was handy. Those silver "things" are carbs and on the SIDE of the motor.

I'd be careful about a new motor that sat 3 yrs. It could have some corrosion if not stored properly.

Bill P - Many thanks! I discussed the storage with the dealer, they assured me that the unit is still in the original shipping box (undamaged) and has been stored inside and well protected. In addition, they offered to extend the warranty as well. I asked for a service manual and they also threw that in on the deal. Looking at what I would pay for the new SS prop and shipping, etc., that is all part of the deal, the base engine is around $3800 total. I have not seen anything on iBoats, eBay or locally that could compete.

JB / Upinsmoke - I checked today with 3 Mercury dealers and all of them found a 50 HP 4 Stroke EFI for 2001, it seems this was the first year. Motors for 2001 still only came with a one year warranty. I received the affadavit today with the unit's serial number and this confirmed as well.

I REALLY appreciate your replies, it helped me focus in and get interested in doing the extra research and confirm what I was buying. I had a short window to cancel the deal if the unit was not as described and this forum and responses made the difference!

Best regards and many thanks,

CaBassGuy

Re: Mercury 50 HP 4 Stroke EFI - Help

If it is in fact a 4st efi then I know of at least two differences between the early 2000's and the 2005 model - the alt output on the 2005 is 18amp, the earlier one is 12amp (might not sound like much but it does make a difference). There was an issue with the water tube seal into the block, something about incorrect material used, the later models fixed this.

Aldo

i would also talk to an independent yamaha dealer and find out all (if any) recalls/updates exist for that engine. if brand new, none have been performed. first thing you should do. good luck and enjoy-
