Hello everyone I am new to the forum and have found some great info here thus far. As for my problem I have a 1978 mercury 40hp 402. I just recently purchased this boat took it out a couple times and noticed a lot of fuel spewing out the back when I started it along with just sitting in top of the motor. Also it did not seem to want to stay running at low idle. I do not know to much about boat motors so I took it to the local marina. They told me I had a fuel line leaking so they fixed it and also put 2 new plugs in. Well I go and launch the boat today and at low idle it is great once I was out of no wake zone and start to increase throttle it gets all crazy. From around half to full throttle it will start to go then bog down then go again. It just revs and takes off then down then back up. I'm just really confused on how it ran amazing before at full throttle and now it's not. It does not die at full throttle or even act like it wants to it just won't go. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thank you all in advance.

Sounds like it's still wanting for fuel. Any blockages in the tank/fuel line? tank vent open? have you tried pumping the bulb when it's bogging down? The screen in the fuel pump have debris in it? Fuel filter somewhere plugged?

Just a few thoughts...

I did have the gas tank vent open. Today if it stops raining I will take it out and try pumping the bulb and check the filters. Thank you for the advice I will let you know if I have any luck.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back on here been kinda busy lately. Just wanted to let you know that with the motor trimmed down it does not bog or rev up and down it runs perfect. Thank you for the advice.

I used to own one of those , it was a very dependable motor, ran it for many years.
