I think this motor is a 1987 model. I have been cranking this boat, but haven't been using it. I emptied the tank and put some fresh non-ethanol gas in the tank. The motor ran fine on the water, but wouldn't idle right. It would die. I took off the carb and cleaned it out. Then it would not start. It has no spark at the plugs. I have checked for disconnected wires. I am not very familiar with outboards. Where do I need to begin the process of elimination?

Thanks, Steve

Is it oil injected or are you mixing the fuel yourself? If you're manually mixing the fuel are you using the 50:1 ratio? Removing the carbs shouldn't cause a spark failure. Check your battery to make sure it's got enough juice. Sounds silly but there's the old saying: "when you hear hoof beats think horses, not zebra's". If that doesn't work then spray some pre-mixed fuel into the carbs. DON'T use starting fluid. Try starting it again and see what happens.

You should also consider putting in new plugs and fuel filter too. I have a 35 Merc on my 15' Fisher and paid less than $20 for everything on eBay. A new bulb and hose wouldn't be a bad idea if the one you have is weathered.

Re: Mercury 35 Hp

This is another one them dumb moments in my life and won't be the last.

I seen an old friend this morning and he said to check the kill switch. Yep, that was the problem. The boys took the keys out to unlock the trailer and didn't hook up the emergency kill switch.

Thanks for the help.
