Mercury 2001 50hp 4stroke, temperature sending unit removal and installation

Please help, temp sending unit bad, how to remove and replace on Mercury 2001 50hp 4stroke, Unit has no thresds, only a small 1/2 inch aluminum cylinder that apparently presses into water jacket. Thanks

Should more or less just pull out, perhaps the rubber boot is hanging it up? 13536A13.jpg
