So I have a 1988 mercury 2.4l 200 I blew up. I put a 1996 2.5 pro max powerhead in its place on top of the 88 midsection. Runs great but I can’t keep it cool nor get any water pressure on plane. 1-3 lb at idol 3-5 at wot. Motor is in water good while on plane . tell tell always got water coming out. New plumbing done to motor t-stats are in place poppet vaulted is in all factory plumed. New water pump and housing.
to me that’s no expert it seems the water is dumping into the exhaust before supplying the engine. The water has flow off the top of the block at idl but I can easily with very little if any effort with my finger stop it there just no force Please help this has been a tuff one.

Did you install the 2.5 adapter plate?
Form what I was told it was replaced but what I fear is I have heard that both pieces need to be replaced with a plate from 1992 or newer and only one was if this is even possible . The problem is I do not see a parts number on the parts and I do not know how to identify them the difference that is.

a 2.5 (even tha 225 PM) will run ona 2.4 mid... can get ya part numbers but if ya don't know what ya lookin' at you probably won't know tha difference... if this is tha case ya need ta start completely over with tha adapter plates.. there are several combinations you could possibly have and if they aren't right ya gonna have tha problems ya got... ya need ta find matching plates for a 2.5 to erase any doubt.... ya may hafta buy a mid minus clamp and trim... 2.5 150, 175, 200 will work with tha only difference in size of exhaust openings.. you can run 'it like that with tha metal infused 225 PM powerhead gasket...

Ya I was thinking the same thing my self was just hopping for some magic trick that I didn’t know . I found a set bottom and top from a guy they came off of a 95 2.5 I will buy them as a set and install them with the metal infused gasket and go from there. You said that I use that 225 gasket not the 200 or is there no difference?

thinkin' PM has a slightly bigger exhaust openin' vs. production blocks best i remember.. don't hold me to that though.. any 2.5 "high performance" gasket will work though..

Ok , so I found two sets matching. One set is a 99 2.5 135 optimax serial # og805157
The other is a 2000 2.5 135 opti serial # ot147104

my question is will these part work for what I need to do?

Yes I agree I wouldn’t think they would be the sam either. I have called all the shops around here everyone scared to say yes or no. Do you have a contact I could reach out to? Or some one I could tag in pot maybe ?

Ok I think I understand so I’m on the same page . The 2 piece would work fine with my factory tuner?and I will have to plug the large hole. That all
