Mercury 20 hp

Hi I have just bought a boat with a 20 hp mercury on the back. It had not been started for a number of years but to our suprise it fired up after about 6 pulls.. However when we stopped it and tried to restart it it would not go until we poured some petrol into the spark plug holes. We did not have a proper fuel tank for the motor and so used a standard fuel can with the pipe just placed into the petrol. Can anyone tell me if this may have been the cause of the re starting problems as other than this the motor ran perfectly.Many thanks. Tony.

Hi,

The water pump maybe weak causing it to run a little hot. They will be hard to start when they are hot.
