I have an older Mercury outboard 175hp SN# 5180350 everything electrical has been replaced but I’m not sure it is done correctly due to being in pieces when I got the engine. I put all new electrical components on it but I think the stator might not be in the proper location. It starts but starts hard and seems like it has a miss. Compression is good and I can find nothing on the placement of the stator so I kinda guessed where it went. Any help on this would be much appreciated

I would recommend a service manual. it will tell you how to link and synch that motor, which is essential to make it run correctly and not damage itself.

There are some free online service manuals. You might search for them. According to the maxrules web site, your motor is a 1979.

Thank you for this information Chris and I do have a service manual but unfortunately it does not key in on my specific engine and the exact placement of the stator however it has been very helpful in determining that my electrical components are indeed good.

Have you performed the link and synch procedure? That will tell you if you have spark at the right time for idle pickup timing and max spark advance. If you have spark at the right time, the stator placement is likely good, no?

stator (9 and 16 amp) position really has no particular clocking.. jus usually between 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock.. wherever you can get screw holes ta line up...........

Until you do a proper link and sync you are wasting your time. I learned this the hard way dragged my boat to the lake twice and it wouldn't go over 1500rpm when under load. Link and sync later I was off to the races.
