Hello all !

First of all, sorry for my bad english, but i'm french... (I know, nobody is perfect :D )

I come to you because I have a problem with a 2003 Mercury 150 EFI 2-stroke outboard (for information, it is mount on a Jeanneau leader 650). I try to do a shearch on the forum, but after each try I see an empty page...

To summarise, the engine don't start.

- I check the batterys, they are OK (I charge them at 100%).
- The sparks plug are new.
- I check all the electical routing and each plug of the ECM (nothing special)
- I check the fuses on the ECM routing, they are OK.
- The fuel tank is full like the oil tank, and both go into the cylinder.
- The circuit breakers (sorry, i don't know the english word, its a word by word translation from french) are OK

For the story, the boat was send to the mechanic for his annual checking. The engine was working very weel.
When we took back the boat, the engine was not started. The mechanic say to us, after 8 hours of man hour, that the ECM is out. They say too, that an electronic problem could happen at any time, so they are not responsible. This is an other topic between us and the mechanic.. :p

After a quick shearch on a french forum, someone say that the only way to know if the ECM is out, is to replace it by another. We know that our mechanic don't do that. So we are not sure that the problem come from the ECM.

Now, the questions:

- Do you know a way to test if the ECM is working or not, o the guy on the french forum is totally right ?
- My boat is in spain, but I live in france, do you know if I just come back to france with the ECM, a french mechanic can test it, o he need all the engine ?
- To be sure, if it's not an ECM problem, do you see any other think i can test to start my engine ?

Thanks you in advance !

It is possible for an ECU to fail suddenly.

If you know someone with a working motor you could try your ECU to see if that motor still works.

There are many reasons a motor will not work.

I need to make sure that I understand the situation. You turn the key and the motor cranks but will not start, correct?

Basic troubleshooting is to verify the motors requirement needed to run.

Check Compression on all cylinders.

Check spark on all cyl's

Check that fuel is delivered.

Is there spark on all cyl's?

Are the spark plugs getting wet with fuel?

Put your hand on the electric fuel pump while some else trys to start the motor, do you feel the fuel pump running?

Hello,

Thanks you for your feedback !

Yes, you are right, I turn the key and the motor cranks but don't start. But theire is some smoke out of the exhausts.

For your check,

The spark plug are new and wet by fuel. All cylinder's have sparks and the fuel pump is running well.

Now I will shearch someone with the same engine and do the test.

Thanks again,

Re: Mercury 150EFI 2-stroke won't start (ECM problem ?)

Hello guys,

I'm back after a long time of search about my problem. Now it's finish !! My engine run at perfection.

For your information and if someone have the same issue, I will explain to you what's the solution.

I don't want to spend 2000 euros for a piece that broke by miracle (and to finish my bad summer, my wife hurt is hand in the house and my son destroy my car, hopefully, without scratch for him or the other guys in the other car. Every body is well now :) ).

So I have contact an other guy for a check of my Engine. He come with is computer and he try to start the engine by the computer and not by the ECU. Nothing.. the engine don't start. So it's not the ECU.
After a quick check on the Engine he found that the sparks plugs are not the good one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Change by my previous mechanic for the first time in 6 years of services, he puts NGK sparks plugs BP8H-N10 instead of BPZ8HS-10 normaly installed.

Sparks Plugs + man hour: 300 euros and a kill wish for my EX mechanic... :D

Thank you for your help!

Have a good day.
