Ive got a 78 cajun fishing boat with a blown 1977 merc 1500 and I bought another boat with a broken transome with a rebuilt 1972 1150 with no tilt and trim on that boat but the cajun with the dead 1500 has tilt and trim as we measured some of the main mounting hardware on each motor and they are the same and what we are puzzled with is this can we or how complicated is it to extract the dead engine off the boat and leave the hydraulics on the boat for tilt and trim and mount the 1150 on the transome and get it all hooked back up correctly without a lot of painz in de azz ,now Im not a boat mechanic but I do have a lil mechanical aptitute so I guess Im looking for opinions as how big a mess Im about to get involved in with this project, any help or advice is much appreciated and thanks again.

There are 2 ways to go about this. One is to keep the mid tower on the transom and remove the powerhead from both and swap them. I did that with a couple of them, I took the powerhead and the Belly Pan (The cowling with the "Handles") and mounted them on the mid tower that was bolted to the boat.

The other way is to unbolt the power tilt's rams from the engine and swap thye entire engines and just re-connecdt the power tilt rams to the new engine.

Others will chime in with other options.

I've done that same swap both ways. I think just pulling the whole motor is the easiest way, but I have a hoist to lift my motor. If I had to lift it by myself, I'd just swap the powerheads.

The 1972 Mid section exhaust addapter is different from the 1977, the '72 115 is the last year where they used the exhaust adapter commen to the 1000's to 1350's. In 1972 the 1400's and later inlines went to a tuned adaptor (two indvidual exhaust out lets from the block) So In '72 the 1150 used the old and the 1400's used the new. Either way you have some work ahead of you.

Well, in light of what 194269 said, I'd just swap the whole motor out then. It's not hard to do at all.
