Re: Mercury 150 hp EFI Nitro

Those impellers vanes should have flipped to the proper direction the first time it turned the right direction, unless an old impeller was installed that already had a set in the vanes. Even then it should have pumped some water, enough to keep from burning the impeller up.

Sounds more like the motor was run without water. With muffs on, the water would have at least reached the pump and prevented it from burning up the impeller and housing.

Re: Mercury 150 hp EFI Nitro

Don.when I pulled the lower unit off the impellers were all turned counter clockwise. I didn't run it without water. When he first put it on it pissed but not strong I thought because the muffs wasn't giving it enough water. When I bought the new pump the guy said the larger impellers adjust themselves. This impeller is smaller and very stiff. He told me what he does because they are so hard to bend is use a tie wrap and when I place the pump cover on clip the tie wrap. I haven't put the new one on yet i am going to do that in a few minutes. Any suggestions I am not sure if the grease will work. But willing to try anything to make sure I get the in the right direction. Thanks everyone Robintx2

He has it backwards. Merc even noted it in a service bulletin that the longer vane impellers need to be installed correctly because the vanes won't right themselves and could cause an overheat under load.
The shorter vane impellers do flip. Of course, if your shop used an aftermarket impeller, there are some of them that are so stiff they probably won't flip over.
Have never had problem with OEM impellers not flipping over.

That does make sense Don the longer ones would be harder to turn themselves. I found out the problem with my water pump and come to find out it was operator error. Both myself and the mechanic didnt line the water tube up even with the guide that comes with the pump. I looked at his guide and the guide I put on this morning and you could see where we missed the hole and it cracked the guide so we were not getting any water. To the engine. So I put it back in and took my time and lined everything up. It worked fine. It was peeing strong. I took it on a test run for about 30 minutes. I ran it kind of slow for about 5 minutes and then I tucked the motor under I wanted to see how long it would take to plain out because this is a heavy boat. 18 foor Deep V. But it came out of the water and plained out quick. That motor pushed the boat quick I was surprised. I didnt have my GPS so I could tell you how fast but it was pushing it faster that I thought. Anyway I hope that is the end of any issues. The motor has been checked from head to toe now. I appreciate everyones input and advice. I hope all of you and your families have a safe and Merry Christmas. And if this offends anyone oh well. God bless our troops and their families. I appreciate everything they are sacrificing for us.
