Mercury 150. carborator problems?

I have a Mercury 150 (two stroke) Blackmax.

I have just rebuilt the fuel pump. The motor starts up and idles fine. The engine will rev up fine as long as it is in neutral. Once you put it in gear and advance the trottle the engine dies. If you hold the choke down the motor (in gear) will run to about 1/2-2/3 speed. Not sure where to go next and why holding the choke on makes it run better.

What does the primer bulb do? (collapse or not) What happens if you squeeze the primer bulb when it's acting up?

Did this just start happening or has the boat been sitting unused for an extended time?

What part # did you get for the seal kit? Check to make sure you got the right one. Not with the parts people, but check to make sure you put in what you took out.

We've tried the bulb when running, bulb stays hard. Squeeze it and it does not help. Run ok when the choke is engaged. Can't figure out why that makes a difference.

Checked the serial number against the kit number. It is the square fuel pump.

Kit is suppose to be correct. QuickSilver kit.

It was running ok, change the plugs and started having problems. Put the old plugs back in. Still having problems.

Just started happening. The engine seemed not running up to full throttle so we changed the plugs. Problem got worse, put the old plugs back, still the same problem. Engine runs in gear pretty good when you hold the choke buttom down, dies as soon as you let off the choke. Idles great, revs great as long as not in gear.

This is typical of an engine that is fuel starved. What caused you to rebuild the fuel pump?

Try rebuilding the carbs if they have not been done lately. Kits are cheap.

Re: Mercury 150. carborator problems?

I found this out. When the electric choke button is pushed it opens an "enricher valve' to send more fuel to the engine. This is to help the engine start when its cold. It is also what can "flood" an engine when it is warm.
Since my motor appears to be fuel starved by pushing the choke button and opening the enricher valve it allows it to run. As soon as the valve closes (choke is off) the engine dies or will only idle. It is just getting enough fuel to keep the motor running. I will search on. Fuel starvation is the problem. I am going the check the fuel pressure from the pump.
