Mercury 15 HP won't accelerate

I have a 15 hp mercury outboard which starts OK but when I accelerate the motor stalls. If however I leave the choke extended the motor will accelerate. I am not mechanically minded so I would appreciate any advice as to what the problem may be and how to fix it.thanks johngus

That means your motor is not getting Fuel. I would say your Carb needs to be cleaned. By closing the choke you are forcing the carb to suck harder. But first make sure fuel is getting to the motor. Fuel filter stopped up? Take your fuel line off at motor and squeeze primer bulb. Make sure fuel is coming out quarter inch stream. If Fuel is getting to motor then its the Carb. Larry
