mercury 140hp I/O rough running

I'm not sure the exact year but it is a late 70s model. i can get it to start only if the throttle is open about halfway and it will only stay running if the throttle is cracked. if i bring it down to idle it runs extremely rough for a few seconds then dies.

Ayuh,... Sounds like the Carb needs to be Rebuilt, or Replaced....

Have you checked,+ replaced the Fuel Filters...

i just put a rebuild kit on the carb and i have not checked the fuel filter recently. is it on the bottom of the fuel pump

i tried cleaning the carb again havent tried it yet but there is a line coming off right below the choke that goes down to the fuel pump what is this? it was clogged with this sticky green crap

That line is there in case the fuel pump diaphram fails. If the diaphram fails it will dump the fuel to the hose and carb instead of dumping the fuel to the bilge ... safety thing.

aha i see thanks is it possible that my carb could be out of adjustment? is there a base setting for the mixture screws?
