I have a 1981 115.
Was running fine on the lake the other day, until al of the sudden no power. Was running at 5000 to 5500 rpm, I stopped and started again, would not go over about 2200 rpm. New plugs, cleaned Carbs, and replaced fuel bulb prior to this problem. Like I said it was all the sudden, thought maybe it over heated and started to vapor lock. Took it out today and right off the trailer it would not go over 2200 rpm, sounds like it's missing runs really rough. In Idle I can rev it to 5000 rpm no problem. Don't worry I don't leave it there for any period of time, so the problem only exists when under load. Any suggestions would be greatful. Thanks

Sound like you have lost either a switch box or one side of the stator. Ck for spark

Sounds like high speed stator winding went south.

-W

Is there anyway to check the stator? IT's still charging.

The stator has 2 functions one is to charge the battery while the other is to furnish power to the ign. system . It may me tested with a OHM meter (not very acurate) or a DVA, have you either available to you? If so we can help with specs.

You could of run over a plastic bag, blocked water intake and cooked your motor.

Disconnect all stator wires. If it has a black ground wire leave it connected.

Blu-red = 5400-6200 ohms
blu/wht - red/wht = 5400-6200

red-ground = 125-175
red/wht-ground = 125-175

There ya go... also do a compression test - just to be sure.

-W

Re: Mercury 115 Will not go over 2200 HP

well I found that my impeller was totally wasted, was nothing left of it, but I could have sworn I still saw water coming out.
Tested the stator but I'm not sure of the readings, going to get a different meter and see what it says. But have to replace waterpump anyway.

Blu-red = 5400-6200 ohms 6300
blu/wht - red/wht = 5400-6200 6480

red-ground = 125-175 157
red/wht-ground = 125-175 133

Is that alright if it is high? Or is that bad?
Don't have a compression tester will have to check around.

Could this mean it's a switch box?
Or is it becuase of the water pump. Still haven't replaced, going to order it tonight.

Ok, replaced the water pump, went to the lake ran around and fished and played, was running fine then all of the sudden same thing happened again, loss of power, I going along and it just started slowing down to around 2200 rpm again. This is just to starnge for me. And there was plenty of pee coming out, so the water pump is still doing it's job. Any ideas?????????? Cause I'm out of ideals.....:/

try pumping the bulb when it starts to slow down, or when you have it floored at 2200rpm, and see if it goes up at all if so it might be the fuel pump or carberurators.
