Mercury 115 inline 6 bearing carrier seal issue

Hello, I have a mercury 115 6 cylinder 2 stroke 0B286140, with a bearing carrier 41528-C1. I am replacing the seals and have run into an issue. The inner seal, 8M0204670, fits fine, however the outer seal, 8M0205729, is too large and I can’t get it to fit. I see my bearing carrier has been superseded by 41529T2, but shouldn’t the inner seal be the same size as the outer seal? Do I just have the wrong part? This was an auction engine so I don’t know its history. Any help is appreciated.

Did you look on the crowleymarine web site? They should list the part number of the seals, and whether they are the same.

Thanks for the help, yes I used the crowleymarine website, and that’s how I determined what seals to buy and that my bearing carrier PN has been superseded. As far as I know, the gearcase is original, but I bought it from a guy who bought it on an auction, so who knows. Would it be wrong to buy a second inner seal and just put it in backwards? If all else fails I will take it to a shop.

Marine Engine dot com shows the same Part #s
The Seals are different, the Outer one supposedly has some means of fighting/resisting Fishing Lines.
You mentioned that the Bearing Carrier, has been superseded. Are you saying you have the Newer Carrier, or the older one?
If an older one, I wonder how old. Does the Carrier have a Friction Bearing or a Anti-friction Bearing at the Forward end of it?

With my bearing carrier I am not sure how old it is, crowleymarine does not have any record of 41528-C1 but I believe it was superseded by 41529A1. As for friction bearing or not, it has a roller bearing just behind the seals. Here is a diagram.

Many motors ran successfully with 1 seal.-----Many lower units run with 2 identical seals on the propshaft.----It is only the relentless search for companies to try and cut costs / " improve " that results in the consumer loosing.-----We end up with great looking products that are difficult / costly to repair.----So just install 2 identical seals.----Put some grease between them.

In the Early 80s Mercury changed from a Ball Bearing to a Bushing at that location. I thought it was a Possibility that you have a gearcase from an earlier engine, as in many cases, they would fit.

Sorry, it must be a bushing, I don’t have my bearing carrier on me but it looks like this.
