I HAVE A 1967 110H.P. MERC. I RECENTLY HAD A MECHENIC DO SOME WORK ON IT, WHEN I PICKED UP THE BOAT HE TOLD ME THE STATOR WAS IN QUESTIONABLE SHAPE AT BEST. IS THE POWER FOR THIS JUST USE TO CHARGE THE BATTERY, OR IS THIS WHERE THE MOTOR GETS IT'S RUN POWER. WOULD THE MOTOR RUN FINE UNTIL THE BATTERY WENT LOW OR WOULD IT RUN ROUGH FROM THE GIT GO, DUE TO LOW VOLTAGE.ANY IDEAS? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Re: MERCURY 110H.P. STATOR PROBLEMS?

I have been told it wont run with a bad stator, but on a 1974 115HP inline six, I found the wires from it's stator burnt slap in two,and the engine ran great..Until the dist rotor broke. When I ripped-in to repair that,I repaired the stator connections. The owner reports it "now charges it's own battery, and runs better than it ever has".
So I dunno, to be truthfull with you. But it does charge the battery. On some of these, like the 115HP, it's just a matter of soldering and insulating, and all is well.

Engine will run fine without stator, until battery goes dead....then you're dead in the water.........

Thanks for the info, the mechanic said it was charging now but was in sorry shape. Didn't want to get stranded. Will change it out, when my ship comes in! Thanks Again!

mac bass

Totally different stator.....Yours has a CDI 'charge' and 'triggering' coil as well as a 'charging system' coil. His ignition system rely's on battery voltage, not coils under the flywheel......

mac bass, I have the same 70hp motor....has it been good to you?
