I have a 9.8hp Mercury 110 motor with a problem. The pull cord to start the engine won't go back in unless I remove the top and manually spin it back in. Is this something I can fix or does it need to go to a repair shop. Also, if I can fix it how do you go about doing it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like a broken spring or dirt. Without any idea of your ablities the other question is hard to answer but they can be difficult

Depends on your level of patience. Not rocket science, but it can be frustrating and give you sore fingers. Pretty simple setup, the main thing is to pay attention to how the parts fit together, and take it apart very carefully. That spring will still be coiled up in there waiting to sail across your garage and smack you on its way out.

Thanks guys for the info. I used the motor for several hours saturday and it cranked fine until the last time when we were getting ready to leave. Then i pulled the cord, the motor cranked, and the cord refused to go back in. Soooooooo......... I've never worked on a motor before so i guess i have to decide whether to take it apart and do it myself or get a professional to do it. Hmmmmmmmmmm. If I'm real careful to make sure to put everything back the way I found it do you think it's doable with someone with some mechanical skills? Do I have to worry about messing the timing up?

You wont mess anything up - the recoil starter is a self-contained unit. If I recall correctly, on the 9.8/110's, there are 3 #3 phillips head screws to remove and the whole assembly lifts right up off of the flywheel. (Nothing else will fly apart at this point.) Turn the assembly upside down to disassemble it further. I don't remember the particulars of how it comes apart - someone else may. As I said before just be careful when doing so and you'll be fine.

I have an old 9.8 also and wanted to do routine maintenance myself so I picked up a Seloc manual. I remember seeing it describe the assembly/disassembly of the starter with pictures. If you want to do it yourself you might want to pick up this book and you shouldn't have too difficult a time.

Thanks guys, i really appreciate the info. One final question, if I turn (I guess it's the flywheel, under where the pull cord is) will I mess up the timing? That's the main thing I'm concerned about as i turned it when i was trying to figure out what was wrong with the pull cord.

No, there's no way you could mess up the timing doing what you're doing. You can spin the flywheel all you want, and put the recoil assembly back on without regard to its relationship to the flywheel, if that's what you're asking.
