Anyone ever change the water pump for the motor? Was it Hard?

Circulator pump which is on the front of the block is a do it yourself job for sure.The impeller for the water pump in the outdrive is a little more complicated but still a DOI but with a manual for sure.When you are ready to tackle it ,log in and Im sure we can walk you through it.Charlie

Actully not bad at all....the middle engine is in front of the 2 outside mills. <br /><br />2 boats that REALLY suck to work on are Cigarette 28's or Baja 29's (with the twin option).<br />The darn motors are about 1 inch apart

Actually this is from the speed boat races in Kingston Ontario on July 13th 2004.<br />This boat, one of 123 that were racing that day --------- it was one cool but noisy compeditor.<br /><br />Just a note , when they launched the boat using the cool rider low slung aluminum precious metal trailer , it heart renderingly sccccccrapped the ground and left a 2 inch gash in that rise just aft of the yellow line behind the boat. <br /><br />ouch ouch ouch <br /><br />the lanch and boat were ok but the trailer took a beating er..... scrapin that day.<br /><br />ps personally my budget for boating for the year would be blown on one feul and spark plug change for this one.<br /><br /> The next boat had twin merlin v-12 with a fantastic set of stainless penta props .

Any who........Back to the water pump. I had taken the boat to the mechanic to have it checked out. He said that the water pump needs replacing. I asked him if it needed to be done right away or could I use it for the remainder of the boating season. He said it will be fine for the rest of the season but I should get it fixed before winterize. I asked on other boards about this and was told that if it isn't leaking water it should be fine. Actually several posters told me that. I am assuming that the mechanic was talking about the circulating pump on the block. Sound Right? If it was the impeller I would assume it needed to get fixed right away. Am I in the ball park with this?

ANY water leak needs fixed right away. But since we don't know what engine or year or anything else (even which "Water Pump") it's hard to say for sure why a mechanic would say that. You have water getting on belts an being sprayed around causing rust on pulleys, slipping belts, water on alternators wiring.........

I have a 1999 3.0L mercruiser. There is no water leaking ANYWHERE in the engine compartment at this time. The guys on the other board said that "IF ITS NOT LEAKING IT SHOULD BE FINE" I don't want to make unnecessary repairs but I also don't want a problem to get worse.

Pop,a change of a circulator pump or an impeller would never be an unnecessary repair.It is called preventative maintenance.Whenever I get a new used boat those are the first 2 things I do.Charlie

Yeah I read that in many posts here. For a preventative maintenance people make it sound like its hard to do.

It is not hard to do.Take it from me because I can do a lot of things but I am not too good with a wrench.The outdrive takes more know how than being a good wrench.With a manual and some patience,I am sure you can do the drive.Most PM sounds a lot harder to do than it really is.I had someone here talk me through rebuilding a trim tab cylinder.I would never have attempted it but I was assured by a member that did not know me that i could do it.He was right!!!! It really wasnt hard to do at all.But it was his instructions from the know how that got me through it.Charlie

When I bought the boat I bought the outdrive manual and it give A LOT of detail. I think I will do it myself.

Post when you are about to do it and get the pointers you may need to get started.I usually read the manual the day before I am doing the job and make a list on an index card listing the steps in a 1 2 3 manner for quick reference.Charlie

I have a mercruiser 502 with bravo 1 drives. Everything was going fine until I started it up (with muffs on) yesterday and the water was no longer coming out of my exhaust ports. I didn't let it get up to temp for fear of buring up the motor. Is this an impeller/pump problems. I ran it for a solid 30+ secs and usually water is shooting out after 3-4 secs. Water didnt appear to be drawn in from the muffs. Thanks
