Throwing expensive parts at a ghost intermittent problem really is frustrating. GM and their 90's distributor pick up sensors cause that exact problem until one day it just won't start back up again. This happens in the GM vehicles as well.

The ignition system on these engines is not GM, it's Mercs' own, Thunderbolt V.... Nothing GM about it, at all.

I wasn't saying that the parts are interchangable just the symptoms of the distributor pick up sensor gone bad.

I invested in an in-line spark tester today and I'm glad I did! I'm a little embarrassed to say, it is not a lack of spark problem. It has to be fuel related even though I've been convinced it was an ignition problem all along. Thanks achris for the suggestion of confirming the problem. Because the engine starts back up without fail, I'm leaning toward the electric fuel pump. Does anyone know if this model (1997 4.3 V6 Thunderbolt V) is equipped with a low oil pressure cut-out?

I am going to start a new thread with a different title.

I'm very tempted to say something to all those who were bleating about the ignition system and how it HAD to be this or HAD to be that... But I won't... I'll just bookmark this thread, and use it any time someone jumps to conclusions before doing simple, proper diagnostics... :D :D :D

When someone gets done taking their size 9 merc tools for a victory lap maybe he can give you answer to your question.

I didn't know how to check for spark on an intermittent problem until you suggested the timing light. Then I discovered a tool called an in-line spark tester...will wonders ever cease? I don't claim to be a mechanic, just someone who's trying to avoid paying one!
