Mercruiser shifter

Are there any mercruiser mechanics in here I’m have a problem of when boat in forward or revs it’s hard to get out of gear to neutral new lower shift cable if boat not running will shift thru gears fine so you can cut off put in neutral start back up fine but can’t hardly get out of gear when running pulling on it usually jumps past neutral into revs any ideal the problem 140 hp mercruiser alpha one gen 1 all help is thanked in advance also can trigger shift interpret by hand cuts motor but could be out of alignment or something I’m stumped

The Alpha drive uses a shift interrupter on the shift plate to unload the clutch to be able to shift out of gear and into neutral. You need to check the connections and then if needed adjust the interrupter

Need your serial number or at least what year?

If it's a new to you boat someone probably disconnected the interrupt switch because the lower shift cable is binding up.

Remove the out drive, when the lower cable was replaced a sticking shift shaft would have been evident.
