Mercruiser racing

Hello to all first post I was at the mercruiser web site and I noticed that mercruiser racing doesnt have any small blocks listed why

My Guess would be that Mercruiser is only into Racing for the Big Bucks,.....<br />And the Big Advertizing,.....<br />That means running in the Big Classes,....<br />Going Big Speeds,......<br />And,......<br />That requires BIG Blocks.............. <br /><br />Btw,....... I'll take a stab at this...<br />Mercruiser found out that if you want ot go fast....<br />you can only do it with a big block.

newguy06, Yes, you need more air to make more bhp (horsepower), displacement equals air. So for MAX output stuff you want big. BTW, welcome. You may answer that you could get more air with a blower (turbo or supercharger), but you could add that to a big block too, so again you end up with the big block for the most possible horsepower.<br /><br />They used to offer a 377 bhp small block Scorpion(6.2), but my guess is that it was eating into 496 (8.1) sales so why bother?<br /><br />mkast, Since your comment was aimed at me, I'll respond. More horsepower is why you need a big block. Not to make 320 bhp . . . I have not contradicted that in any of my previous posts BTW.

QC<br />My comment wasn't aimed at you personally, there are a bunch of people touting the benefits of a 377, 383 and 409 small block. I understand, the boat started with a small block, it'll cost me the budget of a small country to replace it with a big block. In a 2500 lbs. 19 foot boat, they scream. In an 8,000lbs. 26 footer they are a joke. Instead of rationalizing your decision to go with a stroked engine, stop telling people with four ton barges to go with a stroked small block. Tell them the truth, a stroked small block has it's place, and that place is not in a behemoth.

It's OK mkast. The only point I have been making through these three different threads is that a 320 MPI small block (5.7 or 6.2) will run with a 310 carbed big block (in fact should outrun it in any boat). When you get to the higher performance big blocks, non-discussion, I am totally with you. The old rules have changed some with MPI . . .<br /><br />I am not rationalizing my decision, I wanted a 496 . . . Bought used, got what I got.

I forgot to mention, the average power package, until recently, was a small block/ Alpha.<br />Let's put a 320 hp stroker on the front of that...BOOM...<br />but you said!!!

Jeez, mkast, I have never said to use an Alpha with even 300 bhp and I wouldn't . . .

I've worked with/for, owner/operators all my life.<br />This is what I've found to be accurate of the "average" (the individual can decide if they're above or below):<br />1 I have a thimble full of information..."I'm an expert in the field."<br />2 "I know you told me about it three times... you didn't tell me it was important!"<br />3 "I need your help...here's how I want you to do it!!!" (then why don't you do it?)<br />4 "It's lasted this long...I think it'll be okay."<br />5 "A maintenance manual...that's for people who don't know what they're doing!"<br />6 "It cost too much."<br />7 "It took too long."<br />8 "That's not what I wanted"....(that's what you asked for!)<br />9 "It's your fault"

I apology to everyone.<br />This morning the "Herb"(ivore)" found out that the $32,000 200hp Lycoming engine he bought for his kit plane should have been a 200hp four cylinder turbocharged diesel ($27,500), the one I mentioned to him six months ago.<br />I wanted to scream at someone.<br />Oh! the humanity!!!
