I have an 88 SeaRay with a 4.3 and mercruiser outdrive. I dropped the foot put in a new impeller and changed the oil. There is now a clicking sound when I put it in gear. There seemed to be alot of slack in the shifter mechanism, and it seems like it moves alot further in reverse. When it finally catches gear in foreward the clicking stops, but it continues to click in reverse. I just replaced the stringers and deck, along with pouring in new foam. It turned out really nice, and I want to get this thing in the water. I leave for Iraq June 6th, and want to get at least a few trips in. Thanks for your help.

Re: mercruiser outdrive clicking

Hello searayvan, i have the same problem.

I get a clicking noise when it comes to the propeller. When i put it into forward it clicks loud for about three seconds and stops. Same thing in reverse. I need to put it into full power to get the propeller spining slowly in reverse. Every mentioned to to check the lower shift cable. They said to either adjust it or change it. I've been busy with work (writing this at work) so i didn't get a chance to check out mine yet.

Maybe this will help you, it's from the post that i posted "won't reverse"

You should read it, it might help you. But anyway, here is the thing that BOND posted:

with the engine off
remote in fwd. = prop is locked ccw, ratchets cw
remote in neu. = prop freewheels both directions, no sounds, no ratchet
remote in rev. = prop is locked cw, ratchets ccw.
