I have a 1987 wellcraft with a 165 hp 4 cylinder mercruiser with closed cooling. While engine is running in neatural you can hear a loud rubbing/howling sound ever so often, it just comes and goes. I am going to sell the boat, but would like to fix this problem first. My thought is the water pump. Any idea's?

I hear the noise right after starting. It does usually go away after it's ran for awile. It makes the noise in or out of gear.

Belt noise perhaps? Try removing the belts and see if the noise disappears. Of course, you don't want to run your engine very long...

Worth a try...

Walt

This might be a long shot, but worth a try. Spray some WD-40 on the water pump bearing. I once had a bearing go bad on the (front mounted) pump. It made a terrible noise, and I had a hard time figuring out where it was coming from. Also, the noise went away after warming up and the seal did not leak. I changed the pump and everything was A-OK.

 Check the easiest things first! Spray a little shot of WD-40 on the pulleys/belt(s). I've heard some unusual sounds come from noisy belts.

sounds like your gimbal bearing try greasing the grease nipple that is on the starboard side of the transomplate the noise should go away for a while but will return in an un known amount of time. Good luck

I think I will try the WD-40 trick, it seems to be coming more from the front than any where else.
