Have a Mercruiser 888 302 Ford. Runs like a champ but sometimes i get smoke that smells like rubber burning. This doesn't happen at idle only under a load. The temp on the motor is fine when i get the smoke. It's not a wire burning. I had both exhaust bellows replaced and it did not solve the problem. The engine continues to run fine. I'm looking to sell the boat but not sure what to do.

from the rear of the engine always smoke from the same side, left side as your looking back at the engine. By the time I see/smell the smoke and get the engine cover off it stops smoking.

Re: Mercruiser intermittent smoking

Sounds like a blocked or partially blocked riser causing the rubber exhaust hose to burn from lack of water?

Took off elbow and exhaust bellows. The bellow is fried. Elbow water passages are clear. the manifold water passages where it connects to the elbow look completely clogged. It does'nt look like rust. It looks as though the passages are full of metal. I will replace the manifold. Thanks to everyone for their input.
