I have recently traded for a 1967 Starcraft with a 150 mercruiser in it. Got the motor running this week so on to the tilt. First problem I have is that the controls for the tilt switch seems to need a key, which I do not have. Is there any way I can bypass this key switch. There re only five wires running the the panel, two browns that seem to have to do with the key switch, and the other 3 wires go directly to the tilt motor. Next problem, the motor is the original white full powe tilt motor and it is completely shot. I took it apart today and the moor is completely corroded and rusted. Does anyone know of where u can find one of the old girls? If not, where can I get a suitable replacement? What are my options here? Thanks in advance for the help, hope to get this thing on the water soon.

Have you tried the ignition key in the trim switch.

By an odd turn of events I will have an answer for you by tonight.

Have a 66 or so starcraft coming to be refit that has the exact switch.

I'm not really sure the why's of that switch,
But I did find the wiring diagrams for that setup. Maybe they will help. Not sure which one is yours.

86 century, I definitely look forward to eating about your results tonight. I really just want to eliminate the key switch portion of the tilt control as I don't see the purpose or need in it. Let me know what you find out. Done, I saw those diagrams also, I believe the first one is mine as it is te only one with brown wires, but I can't quite match up everything in my boat. I really appreciate the help, look forward to hearing from y'all soon. Thanks again.

Thanks for the info Bond-o. As far as the pump and motor, if I can't get this motor rebuilt can I install a standard 12v motor and pump? What would be the down sides to doing it this way? Or is it even possible?

Ayuh,... I'm pretty sure that with abit of creative engineerin', you can up-date to the new current production trim pump....

Just be careful what you do. You have that OLD low pressure system with some strange valving and plumbing. You could scatter pieces all over the place with the high pressure pumps used in the newer (70 and newer) drives.

Quite honestly, you might want to re-think the whole EZ system. Trim, transom shield, drive, all of it. There just are no parts for those around anymore.

Might be time to think repower from a doner boat of a newer vintage.

Re: Mercruiser ic ez full power tilt problems

Don, I have been rethinking the EZ, but that will have to wait until the winter or next year. You are correct, parts are hard to come by from what I have seen so far. Could I fit a newer style outdrive to my current motor(mercruiser 150hp, GM 230 cubic in)? Would I be able to find the parts and plates to convert it? The motor should have to same mounting dimensions of the GM 250 that I believe was much more widely used. I honestly want to get this thing on the water while I still can this summer. Do you know know what kind of pressure is created in the low pressure pump? As far as the pics Bond-o, I will take some tomorrow. The boat is at my shop and I have already left for the day. From what I know, it is fairly simple. There is one hose coming out of the pump and it goes to the gimbal housing, and from there two hoses go to the lift cylinders. I honestly don't see much else to te system.
