mercruiser fuel system problems

I have a 78 MerCruiser 470 and I seem to be having fuel problems. I have a little more then a half tank of gas, and the fuel lines don't seem to be getting filled up. I think the fuel pump may be bad, I am going to try a few things this week, mainly putting a tad bit of fuel in the carb to see if she will start up that way, but I would like to know what other things I should be looking at. I know that the carb is not getting any fuel, and the carb is new last year. If it is the fuel pump, would anyone recommend caping off the old fuel pump port and putting in an electric fuel pump? I'm a noob when it comes to working on boats, thanks for any help.

You should repost this in the I/O section of the forum. I would disconnect the fuel line at the carb and crank her a bit. Gas should pump out well. If no gas, you have clogged filter, air leak in fuel line, bad AntiSiphon valve or bad fuel pump. Some of those old Mecruisers had a paper filter in the carb where the fuel line attached and a filter "stone" on top of the fuel pump. Either could be clogged.
