I think I have read that the mercruiser 305 gm fuel pump is not rebuildable. However the one one my boat looks to me like it could be easily taken apart. There are screws around the entire circumference of the body. Is it true that there are no kits available for this fuel pump?

Yup, it's true. If it's bad it needs to be replaced with a marine fuel pump. Although the automotive pump may look simular, they are different. Use the proper marine replacement.

They had kits at one time, maybe still do, but I think a lawsuit might have put the kaboosh on that idea, as its not something a shade tree should be a'fixin. Just go get a new Marine pump. IBoats has them I believe. Local dealer will jack the price $40
