Re: Mercruiser Electronic Timing Advance Problem

that makes perfect sense. should be a simple robust system - really quite uncomplicated.

that leaves only one culprit - the module. alright, I know you said that several posts ago. Will quit beign a hardhead and order the mercruiser part on-line today.

will let you know how i fare in a week or so. once again thanks for educating me.

Re: Mercruiser Electronic Timing Advance Problem

ODDD1 and/or clanton - here's an update.
I ordered the Mercruiser module and they said it would be 4 days - 2 weeks later and still nothing.

However, here is something interesting that might be another clue. Had the boat out all day today and noticed that the tach was drifting all over the place. Cruising at about 4000 rpm and the gauge would drift up to 4500 and drop as low as 3500. My calibrated ear tells me the rpm didn't change more than 50 rpm through the entire process.

I know the tach is connected to the distributor signal somehow. Could a problem with the tach or the tach wiring be locking the module in service mode???

Re: Mercruiser Electronic Timing Advance Problem

clanton - thanks for the lead. what a great site. just wish i had the tools that he has for diagnosis.

it is clear from his last paragraph that ODDD1 has been correct all along - only the original delco part will work. he had the same experience that i have had - putting two "import" clones in place and neither of them performing the advance. i assume that NAPA probably buys clone parts as well.

he mentions both an ECM and an ICM module, but i think that both funcions are built into this single module. if not, there is another part to this ignition system enbedded somewhere (but i doubt it)

clearly if the module does not receive a "5V bypass signal" it sticks in service mode with no advance possible. this signal has got to be internal to my specific module and therefor i cannot test for it. i will wait on the mercruiser part and give you an update once i kill this beast...

Re: Mercruiser Electronic Timing Advance Problem

Problem Solved!

Got the correct control module from Mercruiser and installed it lates weekend and it works as advertised. ODDD1 you were right all along. Both parts from NAPA were faulty. Incidentally they were "Made in USA". When I got the Mercruiser part, stamped with the GM logo, I flipped it over to find that it was made in Singapore...

The final analysis, to any future reader that blunders onto this problem is this: Follow the advice of the commercial and "Use only genuine GM parts".

QED and close file...

Alright, you got it...

Although, I would really loved to have fulfilled this obligation. From one beer lover to another, LaBatts is a real fine Canadian beer!

On another note, I posted a question yesterday regarding spark plugs for the 3.0L versus the 3.0LX engine. You got any expertise or experience here?
