Mercruiser coil failure

I have twin 2001 Mercruiser 5.0 L Brava 3. My starboard coil went two weeks ago and I replaced with a new Mercruiser coil which lasted about 40 min (ran the engine to temperature 4 times). I went out yesterday and the engine quit and wouldn't restart. At the dock I tried the port coil on the starboard engine it started fine. Could the new coil be defective or is the upstream electronics (adapter, driver, whatever) somehow "killing" the coil. I did a resistance test on the defective coil and it was identical to the good one. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
