Mercruiser Alpha One overheating

New to boats and could use a little help. Drained water from block last year and engine is now overheating. Is it possible that I have a vapour lock or is there some priming that needs to done? It would be pure coincidence that the thermstat would go just after draining. Any info would be great.

Thermostats sometimes freeze in the closed position. The owners I know who do leave the engine dry for the winter atleast prefill the block and manifold first thru the hoses.
