I have lost reverse on my outdrive. If I take the shift cable off on the engine and pull it all the way out it grinds at the very end,but will not go into reverse.. Any Ideas. I had the drive off and could shift it by hand into reverse. could it be the cable? It looked like it was all the way in at the drive end with the shifter in reverse:confused:.

Sounds like a worn shift crank or shift spool.....
You need to perform the test outlined on page 1C-43 in Merc. manual #6, to see if you have excessive play......:(

I am going to replace the shift cable first and go from there..Even if I have to replace the drive, a new cable would be in order anyway.
