Mercruiser 898 cutting out

Ok, so here's the deal. At the end of last year and the beginning of this year the 898 would run fine for about 45 minutes, it started to surge at higher rpms and then eventually cut out. It would start up no problem but would cut out again if you gave it throttle. Let it sit for an hour and would run fine again for 45 minutes. Took it into to a mechanic and he replaced the distributor, alternator, and a bunch of other misc. things. Took it out after the repair and the same problem happened. Took it to a different marina and they took it out on the water and tested it out. Apparantly the exhaust bellows were cracked and it was pouring water onto the electrical system, seemed plausible. Would run fine until it got wet, cuts off and then would run fine when it dried out. Seemed like a good solution. Went out on lake michigan on friday night and thought everything was good, I was wrong. The exact same problem occured. Ran out 5-6 miles no problem, trolled for about an hour and then decided to come in. I was just cruising around 8-9 mph and it cut out like usual. It still would start and run in nuetral but as soon as you gave it throttle it cuts out. So i drifted for about 40 minutes and started it up again, was able to limp in and the engine sounded pretty damn good, didn't dare try to get it on plane tho.

I just dropped it out at the marina AGAIN, but wanted to check here for some ideas. Getting really sick of trailering it back and forth and limping in. Seems to me that it has to be the fuel pump or fuel related. Anybody else have an experience like this????

Re: Mercruiser 898 cutting out

Definitely sounds like a fuel issue. I would certainly look for better mechanics. I know they cannot really take a boat out and test drive it under load but they need to look at the basics like tank vent fuel pick up, fuel pump pressure and any screens or filters.

Have you looked down the carb when it has stalled? Have someone pump the throttle to see if you are squirting any fuel from the accelerator pump. Once it re-starts, does it catch (fire) immediately or do you have to crank and pump it?

Re: Mercruiser 898 cutting out

I have not looked down the carb and unfortunately the boat is over at the marina at the moment. The problem is somewhat hard to replicate (time required), but everytime its acted up I've been out on lk michigan in choppy seas (dumb I know). I just read over the fuel guide somebody posted, and there's no doubt its a fuel problem. Great guide to whoever posted it. It just seems that every mechanic doesn't want to take the time to actually accurately diagnosis the problem. I know its hard to pinpoint w/ no real information but I will post whats going on so if anyone else experiences this. Thanks

Re: Mercruiser 898 cutting out

I really liked this guide "http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=283269". My question is would most marine mechanics know how to troubleshoot like this?? I'm considering sending this article to the mechanic working on the boat but I don't want to come off like an a-hole. Thanks for any advice, I'll let everyone know how this all turns out. Thanks again

Considering the time, effort,+ Money you've poured into trying to find the Problem,...
Maybe you could find a way to present this to your guy,... Politely...
Good Luck....

Re: Mercruiser 898 cutting out

Well I just got a call from my marina (Grande Point Marina of Lansing, MI) and was told they couldn't recreate the problem. Funny since it happens EVERYTIME I take it out. Im done with them and don't recommend anyone else using them for that matter. OK rant over. Can anybody recommend a mechanic in Michigan that can fix fuel issues, I'm tired of messing around here. I'm willing to trailer it around to get this fixed. Please Help! lol

Re: Mercruiser 898 cutting out

I guess that what it takes huh. I'm going to go over and talk to them and most likely grab the boat. I guess i need to go to sears/west marine and get some supplies. I'll be needing some walking through, but hopefully I can handle it.

don't rule out the ignition either. my boat did similar some time ago and it was the ignition, specifically the coil getting hot. it ran fine for a while, shut down, cooled down, and then ran great for a while, repeated sequence...

Re: Mercruiser 898 cutting out

Well i was about to go pick it up but its crappy and raining outside so it'll wait for a day. I'm giving them one last shot tomorrow. Hopefully they can figure it out. I talked to the mechanic on the phone at least. The fuel pump was reading 7 so he pretty much ruled that out. He was pretty convinced it wasn't fuel. He took a fuel sample and said that it looked fine and fuel pressure was fine. He's going to put it out on the river and try to recreate it again and if he can't do anything I'll just do it myself or take it someone who can. Hopefully its just the coil........

Re: Mercruiser 898 cutting out

Here's an update. Went to the marina while they were trying to recreate the problem and got it to happen...what a surprise. A technician came over and started to look. He suspected a dirty/clogged carburetor. They phoned me today and said it was purring after the rebuild and couldn't mimic the problem. Is it possible to add an inline fuel filter to make sure more junk doesn't clog up the carb? The fuel sample they took looked fine, just want to avoid this from happening again in the near future. Thanks again everyone.
