Ok, so here's the deal. At the end of last year and the beginning of this year the 898 would run fine for about 45 minutes, it started to surge at higher rpms and then eventually cut out. It would start up no problem but would cut out again if you gave it throttle. Let it sit for an hour and would run fine again for 45 minutes. Took it into to a mechanic and he replaced the distributor, alternator, and a bunch of other misc. things. Took it out after the repair and the same problem happened. Took it to a different marina and they took it out on the water and tested it out. Apparantly the exhaust bellows were cracked and it was pouring water onto the electrical system, seemed plausible. Would run fine until it got wet, cuts off and then would run fine when it dried out. Seemed like a good solution. Went out on lake michigan on friday night and thought everything was good, I was wrong. The exact same problem occured. Ran out 5-6 miles no problem, trolled for about an hour and then decided to come in. I was just cruising around 8-9 mph and it cut out like usual. It still would start and run in nuetral but as soon as you gave it throttle it cuts out. So i drifted for about 40 minutes and started it up again, was able to limp in and the engine sounded pretty damn good, didn't dare try to get it on plane tho.
I just dropped it out at the marina AGAIN, but wanted to check here for some ideas. Getting really sick of trailering it back and forth and limping in. Seems to me that it has to be the fuel pump or fuel related. Anybody else have an experience like this????
